Drivers' Championship

Featured Race Japanese GP 1987

Hopes that the drivers' championship would go into the final weekend of the season were ended when Nigel Mansell crashed during qualifying and was ruled out of the Japanese Grand Prix. That handed Nelson Piquet the title as his 12-point lead became insurmountable even though he failed to score at Suzuka. As it was, Ferrari's unreliable engines held out to allow Gerhard Berger to take the win and end a 38-race barren spell for the team.

Featured Driver Ukyo Katayama

Featured Driver
Ukyo Katayama was labelled as the best grand prix driver to come out of Japan when he made his debut in 1992, but after a poor season with Tyrrell a year later it appeared his size may prevent him from handling the power of a modern F1 car. However, Katayama silenced the doubters with a strong 1994 which included fifth places in Brazil and the black weekend at Imola. However, he couldn't repeat those successes with Tyrrell and after a year with Minardi in 1997 he left the sport to go mountain climbing, having to be rescued from Mount Fuji in 2009.
